Silence

10/18/2023

As a contemplative-active community, our Sisters go into the world for ministry while still keeping a contemplative spirit at heart. An important element of this contemplative spirit is the practice of silence.  In general, we spend most of our day in "simple silence" which means that the Sisters only talk for reasons of charity or duties. This doesn't mean we walk everywhere like silent zombies with solemn blank faces - anyone who knows us can attest! - but it does mean that we try to save chatter or funny stories for our times of "recreation".
This may seem severe but it becomes very natural when one understands that we limit our vocal conversations in order to make space for an interior one with Our Lord. For example, the Sisters normally keep silence during dishes; not because they are unable or don't want to talk to each other, but rather they choose it so they can spend that time with Jesus, talking to Him in their hearts. Simple silence greatly aids our spirit of recollection, in which we strive to live each moment in the presence of God and direct all of our actions out of love for Him. One of the beautiful fruits of simple silence is manifest during times of recreation when all the funny stories come pouring out and there is a tangible joy that fills the air, resounding with the harmonious tumble of excited voices and laughter.

My soul, be at rest in God alone,
from whom comes my hope.
God alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not fall.
My deliverance and honor are with God,
my strong rock;
my refuge is with God.
Trust God at all times, my people!
Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!
Psalm 62:6-9
The other type of silence we observe is called "grand silence" which usually occurs at night or during retreat. This is a time when exterior distractions are reduced so that the sisters can have an intimate space with Our Lord. You can usually feel a stillness and peace descend upon the convent at 9pm when "grand silence" begins. This silence is a source of great peace and consolation in our lives. It is the time when we can share with Our Beloved that which weighs on our hearts; give Him thanksgiving for all He has blessed us with throughout the day; and petition Him for the needs of His beloved children which were shared with us. It is in these periods of silence that our strength is restored, our focus clarified, and our hope renewed to start our labors of love anew each day, for the glory of God and salvation of souls.
