In May of 1846 the bishops of the United States proclaimed Mary, under the title of her Immaculate Conception, the principal patroness of the whole country. In the Pastoral Letter issued by the bishops, we read: “We take this occasion to communicate to you the determination, unanimously adopted by us, to place ourselves and all entrusted to our charge throughout the United States, under the special patronage of the holy Mother of God, whose Immaculate Conception is venerated by the piety of the faithful throughout the Catholic Church. By the aid of her prayers, we entertain the confident hope that we will be strengthened to perform the arduous duties of our ministry, and that you will be enabled to practice the sublime virtues, of which her life presents the most perfect example.” As a Community, we honor Our Lady in a particular way under this title and pray together the Immaculate Conception Novena each year.
Week Four of Daily Prayers for the Faithful Departed: Day 24 | Day 25 | Day 26 | Day 27 | Day 28 | Day 29 | Day 30 Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.”
(Gen. 2:15) In the beginning man and woman worked but it was with ease and delight for they were in right relationship with God, each other, and all of creation. After the sin of Adam man continued to work, but now it was toilsome and difficult: “…cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life…in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread” (Gen. 3:17, 19). With the triumph of the Incarnation of Christ and the Redemption He has won for us man is still invited to work – to be co-workers in the redemption of souls through the mission of the Church. Week Three of Daily Prayers for the Faithful Departed: Day 17 | Day 18 | Day 19 | Day 20 | Day 21 | Day 22 | Day 23 Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Week Two: Daily Prayers for the Faithful Departed Day 8 | Day 9 | Day 10 | Day 11 | Day 12 | Day 13 | Day 14 | Day 15 | Day 16 Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. The Souls in Purgatory appreciate the things of God more fully than we. Enlightened by divine love, they understand the respect and obedience which God merited for them, and the ingratitude and baseness of their sins.
