Mary is Our Way to Union with Jesus

1/21/2016

If devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is necessary for all men simply to work out there salvation, it is even more necessary for those who are called to a special perfection. I do not believe that anyone can acquire intimate union with Our Lord, and perfect fidelity to the Holy Spirit without a very close union with the most Blessed Virgin and an absolute dependence on her support.
Mary alone found grace before God without the help of any other creature. All those who have since found grace before God have found it only through her.
-St. Louis Marie de Montfort.

Reflections on Our Christmas Celebration

1/15/2016

Jesus our Infant King has been born; with Mary we rejoice. As we celebrated His birth during the twelve days of Christmas, the convent was filled with sounds of carols and there were lots of wonderful treats. Our chapel was beautifully decorated, with lots of lights, and poinsettias to honor our Infant King. During the Christmas Season, we were blessed to have Conventual Masses for each of the great feasts, with wonderful liturgical music provided by our choir.

Throughout the Christmas Season the Sisters participated in many special traditions, including choosing saints, and sayings from a saint to pray with during the year, enjoying the "Three Kings cupcakes" on the Feast of the Epiphany, and spending time singing Christmas Carols. Each new year, we look forward to discovering which saint has "chosen us" for that year, sometimes they are saints we already know well.  At other times, we have the opportunity to learn more about a new saint. On the feast of the Epiphany, we eagerly await the delicious Three Kings Cupcakes, which look like ordinary desserts but hidden in four of them is a small bean or nut. As each Sister eats her cupcake she tries to finish quickly since the first one to find a bean receives the gift of gold (charity) for that year, the second receives frankincense (prayer), while the third receives myrrh (mortification). Finally the fourth sister is considered the "fourth wise man" who persevered to the end. Another tradition we enjoy during Christmastide, is gathering together around a nice warm fire to sing our favorite Christmas Carols, and to learn some new ones. We thank God for the times when we are able to sing to Him, and enjoy the company of our fellow sisters.

God has become man for us, the joy of this truth should draw us ever deeper into the Heart of Christ with each passing year. May we never lose sight of the wonder of Christmas, but grow to appreciate and understand it more and more fully.

Monthly Devotion: Most Holy Name of Jesus

1/9/2016

"At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow of those in Heaven, and on earth, and under the earth."  Philippians 2:10.
This month we honor the Most Holy Name of Jesus, our source of life and salvation. His is no ordinary name since it was first spoken to Mary by an angel during one of the most important events in history. With this event we understand that Our Lord has become man for us, like us in all things but sin.
He is the one we must honor at all times, certainly in our thoughts, and deeds,  but especially in our speech. For us the name of Jesus is not just another word, but expresses someone whom we should love, honor, and adore more and more at each moment of our lives. Each time we hear Jesus' name it should raise our hearts toward Heaven, and increase the love in our hearts for Him.
It would be very good for us to also develop the habit of bowing our heads a little when we hear the Holy Name not just during this month but all throughout our lives. In performing this small act we show humility and offer God the worship which is rightfully His by virtue of His nature.

 Mary Mother of God

1/6/2016

As we begin a new year, the Church in her wisdom celebrates the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, on January 1st. What better way could there be to start the year than by refocusing our attention on such a pure, holy Mother?
We respect, honor and love our earthly mothers for all that they have done for us, how much more we should do this for our heavenly mother. Before time began she was chosen as the mother of our Savior, God freed her from sin at the first moment of her Conception, knowing that at the right time she would freely give her yes to God. From all eternity God planned that this woman would be the mother of God yet since He will always respect our freedom, He sent an angel to invite her to accept this special role and she beautifully expressed her consent. Mary is no ordinary woman not only is she the Mother of God but at Calvary she became the mother of each of us.
Certainly the more we honor her, the more she will intercede that God’s richest blessings will be showered upon us. She is our mother, and cares for each of us as her own children.  Let us resolve, to spend this year growing in love for our Blessed Mother, and asking her make to us ever more like her.
