When the Lord Gives You Pears

The saying, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade!" is much more applicable in the convent than one might think. 

Our loving benefactors take such good care of our growing family, and thus, when God blesses their lands, they share with us some of the delicious fruits of the harvest! Recently, a generous couple blessed the Community with a box of pears and apples. And talk about delicious! (How often can one say they ate a piece of fruit freshly picked off the tree?) 

The Sisters had more fruit than could be eaten fresh, and so, what do the Sisters do when the Lord gives them apples and pears? They make pear and apple sauce! ​It's a perfect pairing (pun intended) for many meals in the convent. The applesauce is delicious enough to eat on its own, Sister Baker will use it to cook muffins for breakfast, and it freezes well for future recipes. 

​Receiving an ample donation allows the Sisters to exercise their vow of poverty (and the creative part of their brain), so that no gift is wasted. Our Constitutions state, "Seeking first the kingdom of God, we grow in trust of God’s Providence while exercising mature stewardship of His gifts." God always takes care of His little spouses. It is then our duty to in turn take care of all He bestows upon us because indeed all belongs to Him. 

Further, "We strive to keep our hearts detached from temporal affairs by means of an unbounded confidence in a Providential God who feeds the birds of the air and clothes the lilies of the field  (cf. Matt. 6:25-34)." 

​Sometimes, though, He wishes to feed His Brides with pears and apples ... and the Sisters are quite thankful!
