Last Sunday, the Church presented to us Christ in the desert to remind us that this holy season of Lent is a season of mortification and to arm us with the tools we need for spiritual combat: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The Gospel this Second Sunday of Lent brings us to consider the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. While last week we received what we are to do, the mystery of the Transfiguration reveals to us why we go into the desert with Christ for forty days. The goal of every baptized Christian is union with Christ, to be transfigured into Christ. This can only happen through our entry into His passion, by our dying to self so that He can live in us.
"Mercifully perfect within us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the aid given us by this holy observance: that what by Thine instruction we know we should do, by Thine assistance we may do it."
~ A Lenten Collect
