Queen of the May

​What a beautiful month is May! As the Bridegroom proclaims in the Song of Songs, “see, the winter is past,/the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth,/the time of pruning the vines has come,/and the song of the turtledove is heard in our land.” (Songs 2:12)

Truly, this is the loveliest month of the year, which makes it altogether fitting that the Church has dedicated it to Our Lady, Queen of the May. We honor Mary as our Queen because she, the Mother of the King of Heaven, has been crowned with by her Son (see Revelations 12) and entrusted by Him with all the graces needed for our salvation. As a loving mother and a wise queen, Mary gently guides each willing soul in its pilgrimage to our heavenly homeland, freely bestowing graces abundant as flowers on all those who ask for her aid.

In gratitude to our heavenly Queen and Mother, the Marian Sisters seek to express concretely their devotion to Mary, especially during the month of May. Each Sister, from the youngest postulant to our Mother Superior, has the opportunity to crown Our Lady during these thirty days. The Sister will choose one of the many statues of Mary on our convent grounds (we think there are eleven, but we can never quite keep count!) and then fashion a flower crown using greenery and blossoms from our gardens. She will then choose a Marian hymn for the Sisters to sing and, when the Community is assembled, she will offer the crowning for the intentions she wishes to commend to Our Lady.

Entrusting the needs of our Community, the Church, and the world to our Queen, the
Sisters are confident that Mother Mary will obtain for us abundant graces from her
Divine Son!
